Woodsmen by definition, rangers are often seen as hunters or wildmen. Most rangers are thought of as rural folk removed from cities and civilization, at home in the places between settlements of any kind.
Common folk often feel a kinship with rangers and many folk heroes are rangers. They are often seen as the champion of the peasant and defender of the people. Conversely, urban folk often see rangers as backward hillfolk and nobles frequently think of them as subversive figures seldom better than rebels or vagabonds.
Rangers are especially common in the elven lands and in the Lawless Lands to the Northwest. In contrast to popular belief there are a large number of urban rangers in the large cities, frequently found in dangerous slums or ghettos.
